Ok so this was a twisty fun twirly ride of depravity I must admit though I hate Kate, and Karl was not far behind her. That said, they made for an interesting contrast to Packer who is a depraved loon whom likes the other white meat.So why the 5 Cause it was a fun twisty twirly ride into the dark side. Read this book for my reading group, not sure I would have taken it otherwise I do read occasionally horror books, but try to stay far away from those where there is too much blood. The story in itself is interesting, house with history being sold and what happens after that.Sometimes I lost track of the story, don t know if it was the idea of the writer or just me not getting where we were going in there But for a first book by this writer definitely one I would recommend to people that like horror stories, and I m looking forward to how this writer will develop in the next books should be 3 stars actually @FREE EBOOK ô Sold ⚨ Mumps Said The Doctor Measles Said The Nurse Hiccups, Said The Lady With The Alligator Purse Kate And Carl Spradlin Want A Home Kate Wants Children Someday Soon Carl Wants Security Kate Has A Past Carl Is Part Of It The Apartment Is A Lot Better Than Living In The Car, But It S Tiny The Couple Cannot Believe Their Luck When They See A House For Sale In Williamsburg S Historic District Going For A Pittance In Back Taxes Cash Sale, As Is It S A Chance Of A Lifetime But There S A Toxic Evil In The Old Packer House He Was The American West S First Serial Killer Until The Voodoo Sovereign Of The Sevis Gineh Found Him She Made Him The Perfect Killer And A Courier Between The Living And The Dead Dead Said The Doctor Undead Said The Nurse Mine Said The Lady With The Alligator Purse Kate S Sins Have Found Her I bought this story based on word of mouth, that if your a fan of horror you will enjoy it In my opinion the story started out on a slower note We started to get the back story of a couple that is finally able to buy a house, and are drawn to one in particular The story then gains speed and all kinds of weird and creepy things start to happen I think the author did a great job developing the characters, we end up having time to learn about their past while living in the now Your left with the perfect ending, you know what is coming without the author throwing it into your face Very Stephen King, you can make it as scary as you want it to be Overall great read, I will look forby this author. I enjoy a good horror story every once in a while I m a big fan of Stephen King, John Saul and a couple of others, so I m not quite sure what was off about this book for me The writing was there for the most part There were places where it seemed to drag a bit This story just never pulled me in, so I found reading this to be almost a chore I d get through a few pages and set it down, pick it up, read another page or so and set it back down again It took over a month for me to get through this book. This book has all the necessary parts of a horror story a serial killer who falls under the control of a voodoo queen, haunted house, gullible people Kate was not the most believable person for me, but then neither was her husband Regretfully, I was never able to engage with the story and its characters.I m of the belief that if someone writes a story, there is a market for that book Unfortunately, I m not part of that demographic Because I never connected with this story, I can only give it two stars. I am torn on if I should give this book a three or a 4 star rating Maybe after I write my review I can pick a star This book was recommended to me and so I figured I would dive into it and give it a try The blurb made it sound very interesting We start the book off back in the day like American West time and we learn of the serial killer Packer Packer is the first serial killer until he is convicted and then soon released He comes into the cross hairs of the voodoo Sovereign She has plans for him and intends to use him So time has passed and now we are in the present with Kate, Carl and Rex Rex is the ex husband of Kate and seems to be stalking her Carl and Kate are married and live hand to mouth every day then they decide to jump into buying a house But this house is selling for less than they expect it, but that is because it is the old Packer house Yep the house of the famous serial killer As time progresses we read about Carl and Kate and how they have to fix it up, they do some work but it is costly We read on as Kate thinks she sees things but she isn t sure It is like ghosts are there and she hears voices, but she tries to keep to herself The past of Kate comes back to her in a way that she never expects it to There isto Kate than meets the eye. Then the unthinkable happens and it is up to Kate to put an end to this evil that has come a foot for centuries But is she ready for it especially with her new bundle of joy that she carries. There is some blood from animals that Kate does see so I could see that being scary for some people Now honestly this wasn t scary for me It was actually a book that I had no problem putting down and doing other things This may be a book that others enjoy as it seems to have a good plot, but it just wasn t for me.I couldn t connect with any characters, as they didn t work for me the only character I did like was the elderly lady in the nursing home she was the one that had me laughing Kate bothered me in a way of when she lost someone all she did was cry big tears She didn t fall into a state of depression or anything which I found to be very weird and didn t seem realistic to me When you read you will find out.I wantedvoodoo involved, I felt that once Carl and Kate moved into the house there would beI am a big fan of voodoo. So there is one part that I didn t fully understand and maybe I missed it but I don t think I did Kate s friend Emmy I believe that is how you spell her name I don t have my book in front of me so I can t double check sends her a text message saying to lose her number I didn t truly understand the meaning behind it Was it because of Kate s ex husband Was it something else entirely I felt this was never clear enough for me.So after reading my review I am going to give it a 3 star rating as I did finish the book, and it was an okay read But I did enjoy the ending with Lee, made me wonder if evil was ever vanquished Ok, so this book came highly recommended and I must admit I was a bit nervous to start on it I am a massive Stephen King and Dean R Koontz fan and few books can hold a candle next to those two authors. So I started the book and was a bit taken aback by the fact that Packer, a killer hasinteraction with his victims than most people would like I loved that this aspect was not drawn out or explored too deeply. Then you meet the main characters All well and dandy but I liked neither I did however love Shadow and the gambling lady in the old age home stole my heart I really wished she hadof a role in the book. Some of the scenes are truly creepy, not I cannot put my bedrooms light off spooky but deeply chilling. If I were you and this is your genre I would say go for it This is worth the read. SoldThis is a long story that takes in many generations of WARREN WITCHES and the curse that has followed or led them, depending on how you see it Kate is the latest generation of the WARREN WITCHES SHE too is being driven by the MOG curse But she has help and a hope that the curse can finally be defeated It is a consuming tale that you will find yourself unable to put down A really GOOD READ..A SUPERNATURAL MYSTERY I RECOMMENDYOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED. Sold by Brad Lee Hayword is a great horror novel Starting with a background story from 1883 the tone is set for a dark tale with murder, cannibalism and witchcraft Forward to the present, 2013, where unsuspecting Kate and Carl Spradlin find a new home for themselves, simply too good to be true And it is The Old Packer house harbours the ghost of a serial killer who is not just a simple killing machine there isto that part of the plot In fact, nothing is quite straightforward The woman moving into the house, Kate, she has a past and supernatural abilities, too.Hayword brings in deeper tones by adding theme of abuse and victimisation, age and youth And there is great entertainment in some of the side characters, namely Shadow the cat, and my personal favourite a memorable Librarian. Now the battle against evil is on in a classic dark thriller that should please fans of the genre Well done. This is a chilling horror story I loved it Kate Spradlin is a character I neither liked nor disliked She came across as rather ordinary and boring at first However, she has a deep secret hidden in a past that is not so happy But destiny or is it fate will bring her and Carl to an old house where evil lurks.Carl Spradlin is Kate s husband He is a wonderful character I liked him a lotthan Kate I don t really know why I just felt that he is a good man, who is willing to work hard to provide for his family. This is a genre that I very rarely read However, I had the opportunity to help edit a rough draft of this book, and wanted to see what the finished article looked like. When I first read that rough draft, I had felt chills run up and down my spine, but reading the final story had the hair standing up on the back of my neck. This story is told through various characters points of view, which I really enjoyed The story is peppered with weird and wonderful characters Alfred Packer is one of the first serial killers and lived in Williamsburg in 1887 His exploits are rather gruesome, and some of the details of his actions are a little graphic Therefore, readers beware He is the original owner of the house which Carl and Kate move into.I really didn t like Rex Fontaine, Kate s ex He is a creepy character, who is obsessed with his former wife He is incredibly cruel and abusive However, I felt his character could have been utilised better by the author as the story progressed Nevertheless, his presence is chilling and carries a menace that had me sitting on the edge of my seat, wondering what he was planning next I really liked Mrs Goddard, she is a wonderfully sharp character whose feud with one of the ladies from the Historical Society called Jane Dillard made me smile, though it s no laughing matter Secrets are revealed and lives are in danger, but watching Kate grow into her potential as a powerful witch has been an adventure that I wouldn t have missed for all the world. The difference between the rough draft and the complete story is amazing The story has changed in various ways, but also remains the same There are several twists and turns which were not in the original draft I read, and I found myself swept into a story that is suspenseful, atmospheric and chilling The ending has a twist that definitely sent a shiver down my back I wonder if we ve seen the last of Alfred Packer Brad Lee Hayword has written a chilling debut horror story His writing style is not particularly fast paced, but his ability to describe scenes with such clarity made the story stand out The flow of the story could have been a little better, as some of the scene changes I feel caused the pacing to be a little jerky I found this story to be highly entertaining, though there is room for improvement, and I am looking forward to readingfrom this author in the future.Due to scenes of violence which are on the graphic side, I do not recommend this book to young readers, or those of a nervous disposition I do, however, highly recommend this book if you love classic dark thriller or horror genres Lynn Worton
