This is the third book in a series by Tim Vicary In this novel, our intrepid barrister, Sarah Newby, starts by taking on an appeals case dealing with a murder 18 years ago At the same time, she is having marriange problems and dealing with her daughter starting university After a visit with her daughter, she meets a man on the train whom she takes as a lover. As with the other novels in this series, the characters are spot on This is set in the UK, so some of the legal terms and processes as well as some of the spellings are different for readers in the US, but they are not distracting and, in my opinion, quite enjoyable.I would highly recommend this novel to anyone who likes a good mystery There is plenty of action and thrills in the read While this is a part of a series, you do not need to have read the first two books to enjoy Bold Counsel. I really enjoyed the story but the spelling and editing reviews were very distracting It didn t even seem like anyone looked over the pages His other books were not like this. @Ebook ⛎ Bold Counsel (The Trials of Sarah Newby, #3) î Some Secrets Are Buried Too Deep For Tears Love, Death And An Ancient Murder Combine In This Outstanding Legal Thriller When Sarah Newby Embarks On Her First Case In London S Court Of Criminal Appeal, She Has Little Idea Of The Quest Of Horror She Is About To Uncover With Her Marriage Collapsing Under The Strain Of Her Career, She Finds A New Lover But Dare She Trust Any Man Ever Again Yet When Even The Police Oppose Her Fight For Justice, What Can One Woman Do All Alone Barrister Sarah is representing an unpleasant character who is appealing a murder conviction, when major events disrupt her private life. If you like courtroom dramas and police procedurals you ll enjoy this crime novel, because it contains elements of both And there s an interesting central character, Sarah Newby, who has become a barrister despite dropping out of school at 16 to have a baby She s strong and feisty, but also a workaholic and human relationships are inclined to suffer when she s involved in a case There are times when she has neglected her children and her husband in pursuit of justice for someone she s representing. This is the third in the Sarah Newby case sequence, after A Game of Proof and Fatal Verdict Although I hadn t read the others, I found it didn t matter Bold Counsel stands alone and is very readable a strong plot with well drawn characters and a lot personal detail than you normally get in a thriller. The book begins with what appear to be unrelated episodes a fox digs up old bones which are found by a small boy in London Sarah is fighting in the Appeal Court for the release of a man who has been in jail for 18 years convicted of a murder he claims he didn t commit Meanwhile Sarah s youngest child, who has just left home to go to university, is experiencing problems, and Sarah s marriage is crumbling Her personal and professional lives are further complicated by the fact that she s also the object of competing male desire A young, recently widowed detective, involved in tracking down the perpetrator of a series of sexual assaults on lone women, is seriously attracted to Sarah And then there is the property developer she meets on the train, but isn t sure that she can trust Gradually all the separate elements merge together into a complex plot and it becomes clear to the reader that Sarah s judgement is compromised and her life is in danger Tim got the idea for the Sarah Newby novels from a court case and an item in the local paper He taught English to foreign university students and occasionally took them to the Crown Court to see English justice in action One afternoon he watched a rape case being heard, knowing, from court scenes the jury weren t allowed to see, that the accused had previously been acquitted on similar charges and was acknowledged, even by his barrister, to be guilty Nevertheless the man was acquitted again Angered by the humiliation and distress of the victims, Tim felt that it was something he wanted to write about A newspaper cutting, telling the story of a young girl who had become a barrister, despite dropping out of school at 16, gave him the idea for his heroine and he began to write The Trials of Sarah Newby The first novel in this series, A Game of Proof, was traditionally published by Constable and Robinson as part of their crime catalogue, but Tim Vicary made the decision to go into Indie publishing with the sequel Fatal Verdict and again with the third novel Bold Counsel He has also re issued A Game of Proof as an e book Bold Counsel was a very interesting read and it has made me want to read the others And if I was ever in trouble, Sarah Newby is the lawyer I d want to see on the front bench representing me Reviewed originally for Awesome Indies Like a good TV series this book series grows on you get to know the characters Not that it wasn t good from the start It has an interesting twist with a hard edged woman barrister and a sensitive male detective going through the story lines So basically you get a 2 for 1 deal with a courtroom, legal detective story rolled into one series Start with the 1st book in the series and enjoy the whole series I am reading the next one now. More than 5 Stars I love the Sarah Newby series I had read the first two in the series, A Game of Proof and A Fatal Verdict, then read several other authors when I realized I had another Sarah Newby novel waiting entitled Bold Counsel It didn t disappoint Sarah is embarking on a new phase of her life but she s still the fierce barrister whom we saw in the first two books Try them, you won t be disappointed I ve purchased the 4th book but I don t want to start it because then I ll finish it I hope there s a 5 I really enjoyed reading the third book in Vicary s series about Sarah Newby Sarah Newby is like many women today, career driven, and in her case, at the neglect of her family Her husband of twenty years has had enough, and he and Sarah are now in the midst of a divorce She is also dealing with her daughter s first year away from home at college Because of the divorce, she is forced to sell her beloved home For the first time in her life she is dealing with being alone.Meanwhile Sarah is advancing in her career as a barrister This time she is arguing a case for a man who was wrongly imprisoned for 18 years for murder Her friend DI Terry Bateson is investigating this old case in addition to a rash of peeping Tom women s lingerie thefts in the area There is also a murder in a sleepy little rural village that keeps him busy.In this novel Sarah also finds romantic interest with a man she meets on the train while traveling home to York after visiting her daughter Will she find happiness I found this book difficult to put down Vicary is skilled story teller While not absolutely necessary, it would be helpful to read the first two books in the series as the same characters reappear in this book. This book lurked on my kindle for months while I passed it over in favour of recent ones Now, on the one hand, I am sorry I did because I could have met these interesting characters sooner, but on the other, I can now savour it as being a treasure all the sweeter for waiting. There are a number of major characters, however Mr Vicary keeps them all in line, well behaved and distinctive so the reader has no problem with identifying who is who at the zoo as they disappear and reappear throughout the story.Tim Vicary has crafted an excellent tale, a plot which has twists than a dead snake on an ant heap Australian speak I was sure I had identified the killer, but in the last few chapters the plot turned inside out and left me stunned.Good writing, superb plotting, excellent characterisation and some terrific imagery ensure this novel is a keeper and a return to the author s work I do hope he is shredding his fingers to the bone on the laptop typing another Sarah Newby story this is a good afternoon on the dock book the story moves well and is exciting enough to hold your attention the characters are, mostly, believable and interesting the descriptions of the area, the windmill house and the motorcycle chase are marvelous.
